Winter
Arrives in Northeast South Dakota
An ice and snow storm that
began the evening of November 27, 2005, left many of BDM Rural Water System's
customers without power and approximately 750 customers without water.
Ice an inch or more thick in
places snapped high line poles that normally supply power to the BDM pumping
facilities that provide water to the east side of the system. Intermittent
power on the south side of the system meant that circuit breakers at pumping
facilities in the south had to be checked and reset as power fluctuated.
The dedicated BDM staff, along
with the rural electric cooperative employees, worked long hours to restore
power and water, cutting the initial number of customers without these
necessities in half within the first 24 hours after the storm. All BDM
customers were back online with water by Friday, December 2, 2005.
