Reflections
from Your General Manager

It
seems like I talk about Mother Nature in my Manager article much more
than I should be, but on the other hand, maybe Mother Nature wants us
to remember that we don't have control of the weather.
We have just been through one of the worst ice storms in this area in
quite some time. The northeast area of South Dakota has had power outages
for days, leaving many folks without a place to stay and left several
hundred people without water. This is where I become very concerned, because
my life basically revolves around my wonderful family and my job, which
is to provide the users of BDM RURAL WATER SYSTEM, INC., with water. No
matter how prepared we think we are, we always find out that we could
do things better the next time. For example, we have four generators for
backup power, we now know that we need at least four more to make things
work over the long haul. This we will do so that we will be better prepared
for the next time this happens. I realize that this is a learning experience,
but we thought we were prepared.
This is my whole brief point. We will probably never be fully prepared
for everything Mother Nature has to offer. We northeast South Dakotans
are almost always very flexible when it comes to getting by with what
we have to deal with. I personally feel sorry for every user that was
without water or electricity for any amount of time, because I know it
would be tough to be without these things at my house. But we were without
electricity, and we dealt with it and got by. So, grow with this experience
and make the necessary changes you need to make to be better prepared
for next time. You'll be glad you did.
